Mick Garris on PIRATE RADIO
With a great subject and a wonderful cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman and Kenneth Branagh, Richard Curtis's 2009 comedy-drama should have a bigger following. Its release was complicated by studio cuts and a title change which, for once, seems to have helped the film find its audience. Hoffman is a rebellious DJ broadcasting from an off-shore radio station and Branagh plays the stuffed-shirt determined to shut him down.

Daniel Kremer on YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE
Переглядів 1,9 тис.14 днів тому
Delmer Daves directed this glossy soap opera about the rise and fall of a truck driver turned best-selling novelist. James Franciscus plays Youngblood Hawke, the country boy spoiled by too much, too soon, and Susanne Pleshette plays his lovestruck book editor. Loosely based on the life of Thomas Wolfe (probably the reason for the extra "e" on Hawke), Daves wrote the screenplay and Max Steiner c...

Already enormously popular on radio and television, Jack Webb's seminal cop show got the big screen treatment in 1954 with a solid cast and WarnerColor to sweeten the deal. Webb directed but his famously stone-faced delivery remained anything but sweet. His co-stars, including Richard Boone and Dennis Weaver, followed their director's lead with their own no-nonsense performances. The film was a...

The notorious criminal John Dillinger is played by the notorious actor Lawrence Tierney in Max Nosseck's efficient programmer from 1945. Written by Philip Yordan and an uncredited William Castle, it's a boilerplate cops and robber story that takes advantage of Dillinger's Bonnie and Clyde-like notoriety. Dimitri Tiomkin, at the threshold of a great career, composed the score. Yordan's script wa...

"Memorable" is the word for Nathan Juran's inadvertantly surreal science fiction film from 1957-"ridiculous" comes to mind too: it's a movie so preposterous the director took cover behind a pseudonym. John Agar plays a wide-eyed scientist whose eyes only get wider when he's possessed by an airborne brain named Gor. The balloon-like creature has plans for world domination and only Vol, Gor's bou...

There was a man in the director's chair but none in front of the camera for George Cukor's classic satire about high society and savage instincts. The film stars the most powerful actresses in Hollywood, each vying for a top of the heap position, including Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, and Rosalind Russell in a hilariously vicious portrait of a back-stabbing gossip. The black and white film was...

The War of the Gargantuas was planned asthe sequel to Inshirō Honda's Frankenstein Conquers the World but director Inshirō Honda had problems; he was in a contract dispute with the studio and star Tab Hunter was replaced by a less than cooperative Russ Tamblyn. Nevertheless Honda got his movie made with two of Toho's best stuntmen facing off as Sanda and Gaira, the hairy behemoths who use Tokyo...

Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp don't just push the envelope, they light it on fire in this anti-nostalgic look at the masked avenger and his faithful Indian partner-in other words, don't expect a return to "those thrilling days of yesteryear", this is a defiantly post-modern (some would say comical) take on The Lone Ranger and westerns in general. Depp is Tonto (with a dead crow stuck on his he...

The formidable action director John Sturges added laughs to his bag of tricks with this old west spoof starring Burt Lancaster and Lee Remick. Lancaster plays a Cavalry man pressed into escorting a reformist firebrand played by Remick who's determined to stop delivery of a shipment of whiskey to Denver, home to a sizeable crew of thirsty miners. Cinematographer Robert Surtees filmed the show in...

The third film version of the historic tug-of-war between the tyrannical Captain Bligh and the stout-hearted Fletcher Christian starred Clark Gable, who brought his best leading-man chops, and Charles Laughton, whose legendary portrayal of the pompous dictator cemented his image in the public eye-for better and for worse. Roger Donaldson took over the reins from David Lean for this revisionist take on Mutiny on the Bounty, a film made instantly appealing by its dream cast; Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian, Anthony Hopkins as William Bligh, and a supporting crew made up of Laurence Olivier, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Liam Neeson. A more than respectable attempt, Robert Bolt's literate screenplay and Arthur Ibbetson's ...

Like the following year's Cleopatra, the drama behind the scenes of Lewis Milestone's Mutiny on the Bounty surpassed the film itself. Its reputation has inched upward after a rocky reception in 1962; Trevor Howard delivers a scathing take on the surly Captain Bligh, and as the foppish Fletcher Christian, Marlon Brando can't help but be compelling. Though the three-hour running time is daunting,...

Mike's TFH entries are excellent. He could make the McDonald's menu sound interesting. Small correction: David Gilmour wasn't a founding member of Pink Floyd though. He joined the band when Syd Barrett's problems became insurmountable.

I’ve seen and own both versions of the movie and I can attest that The Boat That Rocked is the superior version of the movie. Some of the changes Richard Curtis made for the American cut made for a lesser film but the British cut (which I seeked out as soon as it was announced it was being cut down) really is fantastic, and a prime example that any changes made were going to hurt it outright. I had seen the British cut about four or five times before it was released in America (and lordy, that US trailer is atrocious) but I found that despite the differences, both cuts are just fun as hell but if you have to choose one, see the British cut known as The Boat That Rocked. I’m with Mick Garris in agreeing that everyone in the world missed out on this underrated gem of a movie.

A magnificent film which I was fortunate enough to watch uncut in Brazil. I suggest pairing it with the 1960s Polish film MOTHER JOAN OF THE ANGELS, also based on the outbreak of hysteria at Loudon but antiseptic and chilling in contrast to the fervor of Ken Russell.

"Shoot the Moon" is my favorite domestic drama. Finney and Keaton are superb, as as are the young actresses who portray their children, especially Dana Hill who is heartbreaklng. Bo Goldman's terrific script contains some of the most touching lines in any film I've ever seen. I saw "Shoot the Moon" in 1982 when it came out and I've it more than once after that, and then finally purchased the DVD. Why more people don't know about this great film has always been a mystery to me.

Good call, Mr. West. This movie has stuck with me ever since I saw when it first came out. It carries a different energy and a different sensibility than what commercial cinema usually provides - It's original in concept and I found it refreshing. And that Alexandre Desplat score, particularly in the film's opening sequence in the park, is stunning. People are now starting to come round to "Birth" again because it's Glazer, and anything Glazer makes should be seen. And if any of you reading this haven't seen "Under the Skin" yet, Glazer's third film, see it. Just know you're in for some shocks.

I am former web master for Director Tsui Hark who ran the international fan website and also worked on this film. Michael here did a true and great description and review, thank you! It is correct, Director Tsui didn't feel they could use Andy for this second Detective Dee film to play his younger self (after DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME) so a different actor was chosen for the role, however Carina Lau did return as empress Wu ZeTian. The CGI was done by a S. Korean company. The film was only the second 3D film Director Tsui made - the first was FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE which was made right before this - and he invited Director James Cameron and his team to help out with the 3D filming process (I have a picture of Directors Tsui and Cameron together). As a webmaster, on the other hand, I heard a lot of feed backs from fans and one of the top things was people didn't care much for is 3D in any film as long as the story was good. Another feed back was the over use of CGI - which we also hear a lot about Hollywood films nowadays - and the usual over use of wire works which has a long history of complaints in Wuxia films. The film took about a year from start to finish. ... And some current news: two new films currently in the works for Director Tsui: 1) LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES (in post production and should be released this summer) and also in development is, 2) SHIH, QUEEN OF THE SEA which is about a woman pirate who was in charge of 1800 pirate ships and controlled the South China Sea - this later film is being written currently. Thank you again Michael and thank you all the fans for the support!
